On September 25th, we are pleased to give a conference at the Agile en Seine (AES) 2018.
Agile en Seine is an annual festival which presents the most innovative Agile practices not only in software development, but also in fields as varied as marketing, human resources management, industry, and architecture!

Agile to conquer the construction industry!
The subject of our intervention is the development of agile methods in the construction sector. Certainly, Agile is still far from being an integral element in our practices but times are changing and the construction industry is becoming more open to innovations as a result of:
- the influence of developer communities
- participatory design tested on a large scale by startups
- rapid prototyping made affordable to all designers
- immersive project reviews in virtual reality
These steps are in line with greater agility in the sector.
But it is above all the generalization of BIM and the need for more effective collaboration among stakeholders that further accentuates the phenomenon and makes the need to find appropriate working methods more urgent.
Finally, coordination problems, the (sometimes) very significant additional costs of major projects, the inadequacy sometimes felt between a need and the finished result — all these encourage us to find new methods adapted to the very changing contemporary reality.
What can Agile do in architecture and construction?
Agile methods in construction can bring radical changes in the way projects are designed and companies collaborate:
- Improve collaboration and communication when designing a building.
- Better define task dependencies between different companies.
- Create seamless exchanges between the project manager / project owner to have more frequent feedback on the design and therefore build a project that is more adapted to the demand.
- Make collaboration more open by communicating better about each other’s tasks and reduce the tension that can arise between companies.
- Increase predictability as each participant is committed to listing what needs to be done, prioritizing it, and estimating the difficulty of the tasks.
- Improve team effectiveness through meetings using the retrospective technique.
- Test scenarios from end to end at the beginning of the project using new rapid prototyping techniques (3D printer, digital milling machine, etc.) and the digital model.
